They were three young girls.  Except for their shoes, they were dressed alike.  The young one wore green sneakers, the older yellow, and the oldest red.  I had been watching them play for a few minutes.  The game made no sense to me.

A rope had been tied to a chain link fence.  But the girls weren't jumping rope.  The young one pulled at the rope.  The next plucked the rope as if it were a bass string, while the oldest just leaned against the fence, watching the other two.

I don't make a habit of talking to young girls, but I was curious.  What kind of game were they playing.  Maybe they were trying to make a new musical instrument?  Maybe they were trying to make a game up?  I decided that I would ask.

"Hello," I said.

The girls ignored me.  They didn't seem afraid, or shy.  The youngest one continued to pull the rope.  She was singing, I was now close enough to hear.  I could now also hear that the second girl was counting the as she plucked the rope.  She was in the hundreds of millions.  How long had she been plucking?  How much longer would she count?  The third just kept leaning against the fence, watching.

"Hello," I said again.  "I was wondering what game your playing, what are the rules?"

The youngest didn't look up, but sang me an answer:

There is no play for us
There is no rule for us
You live until you're dust
The time is up to us

Then the three sisters, as one, looked at me.  In that moment I knew fear.  Somehow I had come upon the Fates, and the 'rope' they were holding was the thread of my life.  The young one drew out my life, the second counted my heartbeats, and the third waited to cut the thread.  They looked at me and smiled.

"There is still time," they seemed to say.  "Just not forever."

Bravo @aziz ............. Three sisters of fate ................... What a wonderful short with a wise and meaningful ending.............. I wonder would they offer a man such advice these Moirai? The thought reminds me that I need to delve back into a book for answers........... Bare remembrance of the Iliad and the Odyssey allow me only traces of what the Fates were.......... For some reason I can only recall two........ Atropos and Clotho come to mind and the third I know measured the thread from the spindle of Clotho, (trying to remember the name will have me near insanity before long) which was the thread of life ........... The rope in your story no doubt............... Modernized story from an ancient belief............ Clever and fun to read............

Write on @aziz ................

I have never heard any of the references you mentioned Killer. I am truly impressed with this story Aziz. The content and the writing structure is excellent.

This is just the thing you could submit to  http://www.kindofahurricanepress.com/

Trish has Published works here. Novembers theme is Flowers and/or Dust. Maybe @tlhopkinson could shed some more light on the subject?

Here you go Bob............ Quick reference point........... had to go to GOOOOOOOOOOGLE to find it. It's only been..................MMMMMMMMM....... twenty eight years.......... Attribute lack of recall to old age....... alcohol use....... CRS (can't remember shit)............... Or just lack of interest.................

I'll probably be re-visiting at some point.......... I thought Homer to be somewhat of a prodigy considering the time period............ Though I can't for the life of me figure out how they figure dates................ I'm guessing they ......... guess?

Excellent Bill. I could use a bit more culture. The only Homer I could reference is a Simpson.

Yes, Kind of a Hurricane does accept Flash fiction for their themed anthologies. I've not written much, if any flash, so I haven't ever submitted, but they have published several of my poems. Definitely worth a shot!
