Salt Lake City, 1929

A young woman with short blonde hair and brown eyes looks out the window at the Utah mountains. ''Why do I have to be here?'' she thinks. ''Yes, I was born here, but I don't want to stay here''. Winifred looks out the window, and instead of Utah, she sees California. She wants to go to Hollywood, like so many others of her generation. Winifred feels trapped in Salt Lake City. It's winter in Utah, and she knows it's warmer in California. She sees the palm trees and the beach in her head.

The friends of her family who moved to California and are doing well in the movie industry send letters back to Utah, writing of the beautiful weather in California, and of how interesting and exciting the movies are, in the place where they are made. ''You should come and join us in Hollywood!'' Winifred is trying to convince her family that they should move to Los Angeles..the city of Angels. Winifred thinks of the movie magazines, and the beautiful actresses on the covers of magazines like Photoplay. She loves to look through those magazines. She knows she's as beautiful as any of those actresses. Winifred wants to be an actress, too. Indeed, she's already an actress in her mind, living in California.

A small Minnesota town, 2012

A young woman with short brown hair and brown eyes looks out the window at the small town street. She feels so trapped, in the small town. She's 25 and still living in the same state where she was born. ''I've never fit in here,'' she thinks ''since I was 6 years old, I've wanted to move to California''. It's winter in Minnesota, yet again. It's January and the day is cold, despite the sun. Courtney's mind turns to images of the beach and palm trees lining the streets in faraway California. Courtney wants to move to Los Angeles.

Courtney knows she's a misfit in the small town, and that she doesn't belong in a cold climate. In her mind, she's already living in California, a life far from small town Minnesota . She wonders why she wasn't born on the West Coast. After all, it runs in Courtney's blood to like California, and Hollywood. Courtney's great grandmother Winifred wanted to be an actress in Hollywood. She had gotten to Hollywood, but then never got anywhere with her dreams of being in the movies. Courtney doesn't want to be actress. She just wants to walk on the beach, in the sun, in California. Across 83 years, the dreams of Winifred and Courtney, who never met, are strangely the same.
