If ever I have a friend again

I don't know if I will ever
have a friend again. Never
have I known, even one,
someone who,
after a time,
did not turn their face away.

Away from the friend
I tried to be. Leaving me
and the future we
might have been.

A friend should be someone who shares
joy and sorrow,
the past and the tomorrow
of a person not them-self,
a reflection of their self
in a different skin.

I have been betrayed, time and again,
by those who once called me friend.

And I've come to accept that betrayal
is the price
everyone pays
for being close.

But even knowing what I know,
if I were to chance my fate
with some other one,
you would be that one.
That one who would be my friend.
If ever I have a friend again.

Agreed, beautiful tribute to friendship.

I love how honest this is about the struggles, betrayals, and benefits of claiming a friend.

The idea of a friend being a reflection is also wonderfully insightful.

Enjoyed!
