I left Belfast

one rainy morn

in my eighteenth year

violin packed in with my gear

I boarded a ship that carried supplies for the war

she had painted wooden guns

who could ask for more

was left alone until we got

almost ashore

came into port

in the thick of a surprise attack

a shell found us as

we came up to the wharf

a full company of men had not many left

to continue on

those of us still alive

held fear in our eyes

of dreams and the future

gave my violin away because I could walk

a friend could play

and I feared

a single hand future

at the hospital tents I met my angel

she tended my wounds and

stole my fear

my love was

Canadian nurse and

we both seen the war from

a side that had no glory

after the war

we opened our home

to the lost and the leery

those who traded mind and limb

for another’s safety

at 95 heaven called my love to duty

2 years younger as I wait my turn

I can still cycle

on my 3 wheel bicycle

and recycle in

a cart on the back

I sing over and over again

give me your

plastic bottles and

aluminum cans

I collect them to fund

my trip back to Ireland

I came to Toronto

with my wife in 1945

I wants to see home and

be there while I am alive

plastic bottles and aluminum cans will

take me back to my

I came with my wife in ‘45

and I wants to see home

while I’m alive

plastic bottles and aluminum cans

will take me back to my homeland

I came with my wife a Canadian nurse

we found love

while we

the worst

Whoa, I love this piece! I got drawn in really easily.... awesome language here. I also really enjoyed the subtle rhymes. Great story in the poem as well! It took me through several emotions.
