A man is bigger than the life you see.
Sure, he'd like to scale mountains,
challenge the sea,
fight, journey, live free.
Beneath the stars he'd sing his songs
embellish his story
and drink to the good ones gone,
who shared for a time
the struggles that lead to glory.
That's the life no one sees
because he's willingly tied himself
to family and civil friends
and to strangers too
when a hand is needed.
He lives peaceable and carries on
when everything seems to just go wrong,
the wife's complaint,
children at war,
trusted friendships turn hollow.
How easily he could break the web
of fragile promises.
But the vows he made are made
to last, and everyday he chooses to hold fast,
to endure and carry on.
Mostly no one knows.
But a man can know another man
and a man can know his brother.
This is the way it's always been
since time began
if you're a man.
