The king hides behind his children.

The knight defends his queen.

Bishops cover knights,

To lay a trap, unseen.

A castle sets inside the walls,

Waiting for the queen to pass.

Pawns defend each other,

Moving up amass.

They move ahead in battle,

At the king’s request.

Giving up their lives,

The enemy they test.

Is it wisdom that prevails?

And brings us to our fate

Or is it sly and sneaky play,

That lulls us to checkmate.

The title definitely drew me in... :) I love the poem as well though! The flow is great and kind of reminds me of a ballad, and I love how the characters (king, queen, knight, bishop, etc..) are all mentioned and used in understandable ways. The question in the last stanza is the perfect way to end this.

I have been playing chess quite a bit these last few months... many lessons can be learned from the game. Well thought out poem, very strategic :) , and that question at the end is flawless.

"Play for the advantage. If you already have it, maintain it. If you don’t have it, seize it." -unknown

@Forgewright still at the poem-a-day I see, all the poems I have read of your this month have been exceptional.. how's your sanity these days?

Actually I have enjoyed writing a poem everyday. Sometimes I have some inspiration and other time I'm a little Stewie.

I haven't written a whole lot in the last two months... a poem a day feels so out of reach at the moment. One of these months I will have to attempt the 30 day challenge though just to see if I float, fail, or prevail!

Love the poem Forge, especially the last two lines. The poems driving you insane yet? Hear Insanity and Craziness from the prison of the Sophisticated Department? Lol :P

I'm breaking constantly, continuously and always, it's just that nobody sees it - but I'm fine with that, as long as there's something to fix me, too. ~ Me

Being forced to read archived poetry at Thoughts isn't such a bad thing............. I don't know how I missed this one @Forgewright. I have embraced the game of Chess since childhood. You have captured the essence of the game with a unique and colorful animation. Some moves are indeed indelible. Your proposal at the end of this poem is one of concise reality. Sly and sneaky play indeed................ that reference is reminder to the fact that even though we see our opponents move and can study the whole board, a well drafted sacrifice can set up a mate in stealthy style........................
