Being and Breathing

Should I think it silly

To cry over the beautiful things?

Should I hide my eyes

When a tear slides by

In contemplation of a falcon’s wing?

Should I pretend

To follow a plane’s path

When really I am looking to Heaven

And pondering the clouds

Amidst an angelic parade

Of mist and cirrus wisps?

I wonder if I should confess

How greatly this pleases me,

To create life from words

Then gaze upon the mystery

Which a great Creator

Decided should simply be.

To be-

How the possibility

That what I now know and see

Might not have existed

Had their names not been spoken,

Had life not been breathed

Into being with one mere mention

Of what should yet failed to be-

How it all amazes me.

Creation commanded

To be made then worshipped

By lesser creatures only other

Men would dare to idolize-

Meager in comparison,

We cannot stretch our arms

And truly touch the sky

Though we never cease

To believe in our ability

And continue to try;

We cannot sigh and cause

The whole world to tremble,

Crumble, or moan;

We cannot see

All which chooses to be

No matter how far

Nor desperately

We travel and roam

Over nature’s countenance

As if our journey

Were a pilgrimage

To some great site,

A sight we can likely see

Outside our own front doors.

Yet, miserable man

Still stares in awe

Of all the wonder

Left to see, of all

The lovely serenity

Whose unknown name

Was thought then said-

Of the sun, moon, and stars

Which regularly rise,

Of the flower which lives

And withers and dies

Only to suffer in dormancy

Until raindrops and tears

Shedded for the sake of beauty

Return life into its roots-

How silly am I to contemplate

Creation when I see

A flock, a wave, or shooting

Star appear within the blink

Of an eye only to breathe goodbye.
