I look into the mirror and see
A darkness, an innocence,
Waiting to be set free;
I stare and study what reflects,
Not certain if it is really me.
Charcoal-colored curls outline my face,
Wild and careless until they reach my chin-
If only they could curl with grace,
Twisting this way and that into waves
And taking up valuable space.
Ivory skin contrasts my dark hair,
The constant blush clinging to my cheeks,
And the deep copper in my hard stare;
Sculpted brows intensify my gaze
And long lashes-perhaps I am fair?
Two thin lips cannot help but deceive,
Pale with but the softest shade of pink
Which might make me seem somewhat naïve;
There is a chastity in my kiss,
Yet openness I would not perceive.
I am to be viewed how one might see
Fit-I have reveled in every thought
From scorn to praise; yet, honestly,
All that is important is my own,
For all I know how to be is me.

@SerenaLantha This is deep! And it flows really well due to the word choices throughout as well as the rhyme pattern. I do believe you have a piece of poetic perfection here, seriously that opening just takes me away -
"I look into the mirror and see
A darkness, an innocence,
Waiting to be set free;
I stare and study what reflects,
Not certain if it is really me"

I do the love the tone of acceptance and indifference at the end too :)

Perfection; my greatest strength and weakness.

Bravo SerenaLantha. A poem of self with character. What a unique & descriptive way to verse. I think what is not written here is as defining as that which is. You could have gone on & on, but rather chose your words in a very sensuous manner that struck me as having a very bold & provocative connotation. A kind of Michelangelo of the mind. Very elegant indeed SerenaLantha. I loved the ending.

Write on SerenaLantha...............write on.

Yay!!!!!!!!! Thank you both! So, so, so glad this is liked! I figured since painters can paint self-portraits, writers should write them! I squeaked at your praise! :)
