About Me

 Erectile Dysfunction
• Erectile dysfunction or impotence is a condition which affects a person’s ability to achieve or sustain an erection, resulting in inability to ejaculate or participate in a healthy sexual intercourse.
• The risk of impotence usually increases with age.Its also seen that educated men often have less chances of experiencing impotence as they tend to lead a healthier lifestyle.
• Impotence has a highly negative impact on sex life and cause stress and low self-esteem.
 Symptoms
• Trouble getting an erection.
• Trouble maintaining an erection.
• Reduced sexual desires.
 Causes of Erectile Dysfunction.
Usually, male sexual arousal is a complex process involving the brain, hormones, emotions, nerves, muscles and blood vessels contributing to a healthy sex life. The cause of ED may stem from underlying health concerns of any of these parts.Likewise sometimes even deteriorating mental health may also be a reason of experiencing ED.
• Physical causes of ED
i. Endocrine diseases:-The endocrine system is responsible for releasing hormones regulating metabolism, reproduction, mood etc.
Diabetes is an example of an endocrine diseases that might lead to experiencing impotence. One side-effect of chronic diabetes is nerve damage which affects penis sensations. It also causes impaired blood flow which also makes it difficult to sustain erection.
ii. Neurological and nerve disorders:-Nerve disorders affect the brain’s ability to make communication with the reproductive system. This prevents a person from achieving erection.Sometimes, neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease,Parkinson’s disease, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, stroke and temporal lobe epilepsy often tend to be an underlying cause of experiencing erectile dysfunction.
Even long distance cyclists experience temporary erectile dysfunction due to continuous pressure on the genitals which affects functioning of nerves.
iii. Cardiac related conditions:-Some conditions which affect regular functioning of heart and impair blood flow may result in erectile dysfunction due to inadequate blood flow to penis.
Atherosclerosis(clogging of blood vessels),high cholesterol and high blood pressure also pose increased risk of impotence.
Other causes may include being obese,or sustaining injuries to nerves or arteries controlling erections and drug or alcohol abuse.
• Psychological causes
iv. This can be emotional response. If a person has emotional disorders,he may be unable to become sexually excited.
v. Depression and fatigue related to depression can also cause impotence.
vi. Performance anxiety can be another cause of impotence. If a person was unable to achieve or sustain an erection in past,he may have a mental fear of the event being repeated in future.Usually while a person suffering from ED may sustain erection during mornings or masturbation,he won’t be able to sustain it during sexual intercourse.
Impotence can change a person’s life and affect their self-esteem.Erectile dysfunction is not a natural part of ageing,in fact many never experience erectile dysfunction in their lifetimes.Though it can have a negative impact on sexual relationship,it is a treatable condition.Erectile dysfunction may signal an underlying health problem and a physician should be immediately consulted if it becomes a consistent problem.
Exercising regularly, finding help to reduce anxiety, depression or other health concerns and limiting drug, tobacco and alcohol use may help in preventing erectile dysfunction.See your doctor for regular health checkups.
